Rather, the story is one of sociopaths, psychopaths, homophobes, Nazis and – while we’re about it – terrorists.

But what it isn’t is a movie about metal. If not quite an exceptional film, Lords Of Chaos does tell an exceptional story.

Elsewhere, the only sweet words to emerge from the mouth of Varg Vikernes are that he has borrowed the money with which to record Mayhem’s first album from his mother. One of the film’s earliest scenes places Euronymous in his family home – in which he dyes his hair black and asks his young sister how it looks – and his family life is reassuringly mundane. Live shows were also discouraged, and at one point in the film Varg Vikernes says that “touring is for poseurs.” Whatever these people wanted to be, it wasn’t rock stars. Burzum in particular went deliberately out of their way to make their studio output as unlistenable as possible. At least during the period covered by Lords Of Chaos, few of the groups could really play their instruments, a deficiency that seemed to detain them not at all. Unbiddable and bracingly uncommercial, the music sounded like a flight of stairs falling down a flight of stairs. In the United States, the group’s raw and haphazard sound would be harnessed by acts such as Metallica and Slayer, and refined to the point where it attained international success, not to mention respect.īut in Oslo the early-day black metal bands turned their collars to all notions of popularity. The etymology of Norwegian black metal can be traced back to the English trio Venom, whose influence over the entire metal genre ranks second only to that of Black Sabbath. During a phone interview with Euronymous, he is told “we’re not normal people.” The piece was written by Jason Arnopp, who plays himself in the film. The story of the Norwegian black metal church burnings was brought to international prominence in 1993 when Britain’s Kerrang! magazine, the house organ of the rock community, ran it on its cover. Prior to phoning the police, Euronymous drove to a nearby shop and bought a disposable camera with which to shoot pictures of the stricken body. Ohlin’s body was discovered by Mayhem’s guitarist Oystein Aarseth, otherwise known as Euronymous, whose subsequent actions ensured that a routine tragedy at the hands of a depressed and mentally unwell young man attained the status of infamy. Dissatisfied with the results of his handiwork, he slumped on his bed, reached for a shotgun and placed it in front of his head.
On April 8 1991, Per Yngve Ohlin, known to all but his family as Dead, sat down in his bedroom to write a note that began with the words "excuse the blood". Moments before, the 20-year old Swede, singer with the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem, had cut deep gouges into both of his arms, as well as his throat, with a hunting knife.
